MOUNTAIN BIKE: MARATHON WORLD CUP
Nowadays the mountain bike is considered a social and popular sport and each time there are more people, who want to improve their physical condition trough this sport. Its delight´s main reasons are its environment sport´s condition, its single or collective character and its big versatility.
Mountain bike has had a spectacular growth in the last ten years. Its increase has been significant because of the number of permissions and of the big interest of the sponsors beyond the sector. There are numerous amateurs who participate in the different competitions. The reasons of that are its splendour and demanding physical effort. Besides, its Olympic rank has located it in the most outstanding and valued modern disciplines by the Media.
There are four well-known specialities in the Mountain Bike´s World Championships: the cross-country, the downhill, the fourcross and the marathon. This last one is the most recent speciality and is the discipline with more sportspeople. This long-distance event is the most demanded by the current bikers and more and more organizers adapt themselves to this format. Besides, since the last year, the UCI has created an own World Championship and has programmed a Marathon World Cup. A lot of mountain professional cyclists have already specialized in this kind of events, because it can be the future competition´s format, not only in the professional field, but for popular events.
In Spain this kind of events are gaining strength and in our calendar there are many long-distance events. In fact this is the Marathon National Championship´s second year with the best national bikers´ participation and a massive number of registrations. After being venue of World Cup events (downhill, cross-country, fourcross and trial), our country will organize the first Marathon World Cup´s event for the year 2007. The UCI has welcomed Gran Canaria. After studying the project it has placed its trust and its responsibility on the organizing team of this complex competition.
In short, Gran Canaria has deserved being the venue of this prestigious Marathon Mountain Bike World Cup. We are sure the public will be pleased with our organizing power and fascinated with their stay in Gran Canaria.
